We will be discussing “governing the commons.” We will talk about some of Elinor Ostrom’s classic work on how communities self-organize, and we’ll also look at a fun article on the perils of establishing shared social norms in a children’s game of four square.
Here’s the suggested reading:
- Elinor Ostrom’s work on governing the commons: An appreciation (An obituary for Ostrom and a summary of some of her key ideas)
- Collective Action and the Evolution of Social Norms (One of Ostrom’s classic papers)
- Beyond the Rules of the Game: Why are Rooie Rules Nice? (Linda Hughes paper describing how children create and enforce rules in the game of four square)
Please feel free to come even if you’re worried it will be awkward, you won’t fit in, or you aren’t the “typical person who comes to a Rationality meetup.” Please also feel free to come even if you’ve only done some of (or…let’s be honest…none of) the suggested reading.
