June 2019 Meetup: Causation and Explanation: Monocausal vs. Polycausal Accounts

1. Pragmatism versus principles (i.e. prioritizing the practical effects of choices/policies versus prioritizing fundamental principles, for example because of the negative long-term effects at the individual or societal level of violating said principles)

2. Mono-causal versus poly-causal accounts of a given phenomena: The Omnigenic Model As Metaphor For Life (https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/09/13/the-omnigenic-model-as-metaphor-for-life/) (How taking a phenomenon to be caused in part by many things may be more accurate but may make analysis more difficult)

3. An interesting reading, rather than a topic per se: The Tails Coming Apart As Metaphor For Life (https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/09/25/the-tails-coming-apart-as-metaphor-for-life/) (This is hard to summarize, but I think it could generate interesting discussion. It’s in part about how overlap on easy questions masks the complexity/divergence in the tail/extremes.)
