The next monthly discussion meetup is Saturday, June 8 @ 2 PM (see below for location etc.). For this month, we’re going to try something different. We going to facilitate one-on-one discussions (note: not debates per se) with people that have (roughly) opposing views on particular issues. Essentially, we’ll poll people electronically at the beginning of the meetup on a number of topics and then pair people up based on the results. We’ll rotate through a few different pairings/topics and then have a general discussion and reflection with everyone to see how the discussions went and what we learned. If you arrive later, we’ll pair you up with other new people.
If you have suggestions for narrow/specific questions that might work for such discussions, particularly if there’s commonly disagreement among Rationality-adjacent focus, please reach out to me. To facilitate pairing people up, these will have to be reduced to two or three ‘sides’ that you can take.
Please feel free to come even if you’re worried it will be awkward, you won’t fit in, or you aren’t the “typical person who comes to a Rationality meetup.” We are welcoming (albeit occasionally argumentative)!
